The USA Triathlon, the National Governing Body for the sport of triathlon, has recently partnered with a Colorado-based CBD company, Pure Spectrum. USA Triathlon sanctions more than 4,300 events across the country. USA Triathlon not only sanctions triathlons but also para triathlons, duathlons, aquathlons, aqua bikes, off-road events, winter triathlons, youth races, camps, and clinics.
Pure Spectrum said on their website they are “proud to announce [they] are now the exclusive partner of USA Triathlon, representing the sports industry’s first-ever CBD partnership with a U.S. national governing body. Pure Spectrum’s mission is to improve the quality of life by connecting people to the healing powers of the hemp plant. [They] believe [their] partnership with USA Triathlon gives [them] an opportunity to execute this mission on the ultimate global stage—with elite-level endurance athletes.”
Pure Spectrum offers tinctures, topicals, and isolates in their store. Their tinctures range from 250-2,500 mg. Their isolates range from 1-50 grams. They offer different topical products such as a salve, bath soak, and face cream.
“We looked at dozens of CBD companies,” said Chuck Menke, Chief Marketing Officer of the USA Triathlon in a recent interview with Cheddar. “We knew this was a category and area of interest to our athletes, so we took a lot of time to make sure we were making the right decision.”
This new partnership might be shocking to some, but it could encourage other national governing bodies in sports to take the same step. CBD is a plant-based alternative for many things, but most commonly used for pain. Allowing the opportunity for athletes to use something with limited side effects and no chance for getting “high” could change the game in professional sports.
Aaron Scheidies, a cyclist who competed in the 2016 Olympic Games, is excited to try CBD. He says he has “been interested in trying CBD for quite some time now.” He is recovering from hip surgery and seeking help to heal as he prepares to make the 2020 Olympic team. Scheidies says “[He] feel[s] pretty safe with a company that does batch testing and, on top of that, has the approval of USA Triathlon.”
Hopefully, the powerful voice of the USA Triathlon encourages a newfound positivity surrounding CBD and medical cannabis use as a whole.
